You’re probably wondering… what the hell is this guy doing?
I tend to ask myself that all the time given my numerous interest in numerous subjects.
I initially started this online journey as a way to help others lose weight as I did when I lost over 100 lbs in the span of a year.
The connection between physical and mental health was always ever present in my view but my views changed, my interest changed, and my understanding changed.
I went from posting stupid memes online to having thousands of people follow me.
When covid-19 hit I changed this newsletter and my brand to “science by Jae” in an effort to combat misinformation and disinformation online. But that initial goal broke me all the messages, harassment, and constant fighting took its toll.
I felt like it was safer to go back to talking about nutrition as I was initially seen as the “expert” in that domain as well.
Truth be told I am not an expert, I’m just a guy who is curious about many different topics.
Direction Moving Forward
After writing a few articles for organizations such as unsensible I realized there still is a lot to be said about critical thinking.
I want to take the tools from philosophy and psychology to inform myself and others on this path to rationality. It is super easy to be tribal, to be seduced by pseudoscience, and to fall into the cognitive biases that are all so natural to us.
Jae’s thoughts will be a mixture of my own readings into psychology and philosophy with various nuances. I might touch on political topics, sociological phenomena, complex social theory, and more.
This is a space to explore my thoughts with you based on the latest empirical data and the philosophical arguments of old.
Topics We Will Explore
These are topics of interest that keep propping up during my time writing for this newsletter:
Conspiracism (conspiracy theories and the science behind them)
Social Cognition (cognitive biases, heuristics, identity, etc)
Tribal Psychology
Misinformation/Disinformation
Statistical Concepts related to rationality and decision making
The philosophy, history, psychology, and sociology of science
Epistemology
Probably more stuff related to the above.
I will do my best to release an issue every week on Monday.
Cheers to new beginnings.
