It’s well-known in the news that United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson was murdered in New York City yesterday (12/4/25).
This ironically happened before an annual investor conference.
The murderer got away and a manhunt has commenced which has led to a lot of speculation and reaction from fellow leftists online. It doesn’t help that this act seems to be politically motivated.
Fellow leftists have rightly pointed out that United Healthcare has denied health insurance claims more than other companies and has utilized problematic AI software which has a 90% error rate to deny claims.
Consequently, there seems to be an almost celebration amongst certain leftist groups that this individual was killed. In my opinion, there is nothing to really celebrate about this.
Let me be clear, I’m not here to gather sympathy for Brian Thompson. I don’t think the capitalist ruling class deserves sympathy especially as they lead the exploitation of the masses. For instance, hundreds of people are murdered in New York City per year, and rarely are there high rewards for suspects, but for a CEO the NYPD puts out a 10 thousand dollar reward.
Nevertheless, I don’t see the material gains from killing one CEO. Killing one health insurance CEO does not change how the for-profit healthcare system works in this country.
We still have millions of people without health insurance, millions of people in medical debt, thousands of preventable deaths if people had healthcare coverage, and millions of people suffering because they have a hard time accessing healthcare.
The murder of Brian Thompson could be an isolated act or representative of something deeper. I am not here to speculate on that specific point. At the same time, I want to remind people that this isn’t some “win” for the downtrodden.
Without organized mass movement, nothing changes on a systemic level to alleviate the suffering of the many. Individual acts of violence with no clear strategy are not helpful toward liberation and do not mean much.
Turn the outrage against the for-profit healthcare system into organized action.
Just another blow of steam. It’s like Trump or any prez being removed. You didn’t address the cause just reacted to a symptom. Still it feels good to smile as evil usually wins.
